Teaching Vector Art on Skillshare

Want to learn to draw in Illustrator and feel unencumbered by the technical aspects of the software? Well I'm teaching a class on Skillshare that is aimed at helping artists learn to ease their experience with vector art. It's called Creativity, Style, and Efficiency in Adobe Illustrator. Like all of the classes on Skillshare, it's all prerecorded so you can learn at your on pace and view the lessons as many times as you like!

An Online Skillshare Class by Chris Leavens

My goal in creating the class is to step artists through my process of creating art by drawing a story scene entirely in Illustrator. Along the way, I cover a variety of Illustrator techniques, including:

  • Masking, focusing primarily on Illustrator's powerful Draw Inside mode
  • Soft shading: I'll show you a fast and simple technique I use to create soft, shaped shading
  • Custom brushes: We'll create custom art, bristle, and scatter brushes that will look great and help save time.
  • Pen tool tricks and time savers
  • Harnessing the power or the Appearance panel
  • Organization and workflow tips

And a whole lot more. Sign up today and use the code DESIGN to save 20% on the class. Feel free to use the comments section to ask any questions about the class! Hope to see you on the enrollment list.

Hi there Mr. Leavens!

I'm curious about enrolling the class you're teaching about digital illustration in adobe illustrator but first I wanted to ask you if this class is the right one for me, I want to start designing illustrations but I am an novice at this part, I was wondering if your class is going to help me out with that. Thanks alot & I hope to hear soon from you! Keep up the good work:)

It's geared toward intermediate Illustrator users, but honestly, I think it's good for just about anyone. If you're not used to using the pen tool in Illustrator, you might find it somewhat tricky, but just practicing a bit with the pen tool will help you figure it out fairly quickly.

Hi again Mr. Leavens,

I'm going to enroll hopefully your class really soon (next week) and I wanted to ask you one more question, I just got my Wacom Intuos Pro and I was wondering if you are going to explain some techniques for drawing better in Illustrator with an graphic tablet. I'm trying hard to exercise my hand at drawing but enrolling your Skillshare class hopefully i'm going to be great at vector illustration!

All the best!

A.Shala

Looking forward to seeing your name on the class list! Drawing with a tablet in Illustrator is really great, but a little tricky. If you're drawing freehand, it's not going to feel like it does when you draw in Photoshop. I usually create all of my art using the Pen Tool in Illustrator, which feels a bit more technical than conventional drawing, but once you're used to it, the control is unparallelled. My big suggestion is to practice using Illustrator's Pen Tool. Regardless of what you use to create your art, using the Intuos will help in a big way. Creating art with a mouse or a trackpad is really frustrating. Good luck!

Nice Thought & Goad! Carry on.....

Hi Chris,

I enrolled your class ,as soon as I got my first premium membership on Skillshare back in 2015, and I fell in love with it. Nowadays i'm watching it for the third or fourth time - picking new insights each time - and I wonder if there is any plan for a new class on that subject matter (digital illustration with Illustrator - making a scene / telling a story). I feel that now, 4 years or so after your first class, we could gather some more ideas / inspiration through your "getting ideas" and "creating an artwork" process. For me, your class was, and still, one of the best classes for teaching digital vector art scenes with illustrator (you as an informative excellent instructor made a great job - and i can only appreciate the effort you put in this). Hopefully it will find you well and in a place to consider the idea - as I'm pretty sure it went through your mind sometime.

Sincerely yours,
Yogev
